MagSafe, Qi2 and Power Banks Explained

In short

MagSafe is Apple's magnetic wireless charging; Qi2 is the open standard based on it, so Qi2 chargers snap onto iPhones the same way. On the iPhone 17 family both reach up to 25W; older iPhones charge more slowly on the same chargers. A magnetic power bank uses the same magnets for top-ups on the go, while a wired power bank with high USB-C output charges faster.

What's the difference between MagSafe and Qi2?

MagSafe is Apple's own magnetic charging system. Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium's standard built on the same magnetic design, so a Qi2 charger snaps into place on an iPhone just like MagSafe.

For you, the practical difference is speed and price: check the charger's rating. Apple lists both MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 25W on the iPhone 17 family.

Is a 15W magnetic charger still worth buying?

Yes, for overnight charging. Speed matters less when the phone sits there for hours, and 15W chargers cost less.

Good 15W options: the Baseus Simple Mini4 Air (Qi2 15W), the Simple Mini3, or the Simple Mini4 stand if you watch videos while it charges.

Which charger is fastest for iPhone 17?

A 25W magnetic charger with a 30W or higher plug. Apple quotes 50% in about 30 minutes this way.

What's the best charger for iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch together?

A 3-in-1 stand charges all three from one plug. Options: the REDEFYNE 3-in-1 above, the iQuick Satellite 3-in-1, the iQuick Twig T6, or the iQuick Twig 2 with an ambient light. For two phones, the Baseus Dual Wireless Charger has a display.

Magnetic or wired power bank?

Magnetic for convenience, wired for speed. A magnetic power bank snaps on and charges with no cable but more slowly; a wired one with high USB-C output charges faster and can also charge a tablet or laptop.

Does a magnetic charger work through a case?

It charges through most thin cases, but it only holds properly through a magnetic (MagSafe) case. Thick, wallet or metal-plate cases block it.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will a Qi2 charger work with an older iPhone?

Yes on recent MagSafe iPhones, but older models charge more slowly than the iPhone 17's 25W. Check your model's specs for its wireless charging speed.

Q: Can I take a power bank on a plane?

Usually only in carry-on luggage, and airlines set limits. Check your airline's rules before you fly.

Q: Is it bad to leave my iPhone on a wireless charger overnight?

No. Leave Optimised Battery Charging on and iOS manages the charge.
